Decide What the Vehicle Actually Needs to Do

Mileage Matters, but It Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story

Mileage is one of the first numbers shoppers notice on a used Ford, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

Two vehicles with similar mileage can have very different histories. One may have seen mostly highway driving and regular service, while another handled short trips, heavy loads, or tougher conditions. Age matters too, especially if maintenance was inconsistent.

Instead of asking only, “How many miles does it have?” also ask:

• How has it been maintained?

• Is service history available?

• Has it had reported damage?

• How does it drive?

• Are the tires or brakes due soon?

• Are the major features working properly?

The better question is whether the mileage makes sense for the used Ford vehicle’s condition, history, price, and your plans.

Used Truck Shopping Requires a Different Checklist

A used truck deserves a closer look at how it may have worked before you owned it.

Start with the basics: inspect the body, bed, tires, hitch area, cabin, and underside where visible. Then consider what the truck may have been used for. Towing, hauling, off-road driving, jobsite use, and aftermarket modifications can all affect how you evaluate it.

For Ford pickups, configuration matters just as much as condition. An F-150® can vary by cab, bed length, engine, drivetrain, axle equipment, and towing packages. Super Duty® trucks add even more configuration possibilities.

Used vs. Ford Certified: What Changes?

Not every used Ford is certified. Ford Blue Advantage™ offers Gold, EV, and Blue certification levels, each with its own age, mileage, and inspection requirements.

Gold Certified Ford models can be up to six years old with fewer than 80,000 miles and must pass a 172-point inspection. EV Certified models use a 127-point inspection, while Blue Certified vehicles can include qualifying makes and models up to 10 years old with fewer than 150,000 miles and require a 139-point inspection.
